Environmental law sits at the centre of everything this San Diego firm does, and the surrounding work follows from it. Suzanne R. Varco

Varco graduated from the University of San Diego School of Law in 1992. Her work covers environmental matters and extends into real estate business issues.

That pairing shows up in the firm's practice list too. Environmental and real estate litigation appear together, as do real estate transactions and environmental due diligence. The two areas are hard to separate in practice, since contaminated land is both a legal liability and a property asset.

S. Wayne Rosenbaum

Rosenbaum holds a J.D. from California Western School of Law. His undergraduate degree is a B.A. in mathematics and chemistry, and he also holds a master's in administration from Rutgers University.

A chemistry background is unusual on a legal résumé and directly useful in this field. Environmental cases turn on sampling data, contaminant thresholds, and technical reports from consultants. A lawyer who can read that material without a translator has an advantage in cross-examination and in negotiating with regulators.

His practice spans environmental and natural resources law, energy development, water quality, land use, tribal law, and food law. Tribal law and food law are both narrow fields, and their presence widens the range of clients the firm can take on.

Grant Olsson

Olsson earned his law degree from the University of San Diego School of Law. His practice focuses on environmental law, and his profile indicates roughly eight years of experience.

Two of the three attorneys share the same law school, which is the local one. In a practice built on California statutes and California agencies, familiarity with the regional bar and the regional regulators has real value.

The firm was founded in 2003 and previously operated as Opper & Varco LLP. The name change is disclosed on the about page and in the footer, which is the right place for it.

The firm represents both public and private entities. As a reviewer, I find that combination worth flagging, because the two client types pull in different directions.

A public agency needs help writing defensible CEQA documents and administering its own permits. A private developer needs help getting through those same processes. A firm that works both sides has seen how agency decisions get made internally, and that knowledge carries over.

Insurance coverage and cost recovery point toward a particular kind of matter. When contamination is discovered on a property, the question of who pays often lands on old insurance policies written decades earlier. Environmental Law Group works in a field where the technical and the legal are tangled together. Rosenbaum's science background, Varco's real estate work, and a practice list that reaches from permitting through appellate litigation suggest a firm built around that tangle.
