Focus and practice areas

Business matters take up much of the work here. The firm handles company formation, contracts, day to day operations questions, tax compliance and intellectual property. When those relationships break down, the same attorneys take the dispute forward, including partnership and shareholder litigation.

In my opinion the pairing makes sense once you see who the clients are: a small business owner who needs a contract reviewed this year may need a will drafted the next, and the same office covers both.

What a mixed practice looks like day to day

Shareholder and partnership disputes usually begin with the operating agreement or shareholder agreement, which sets out buyout terms, voting rights and how a deadlock gets broken. Illinois courts read those documents closely. Cases that reach discovery often turn on internal email, accounting records and board minutes rather than on witness memory.

Injury claims follow a different clock. Illinois sets deadlines for filing suit, and medical malpractice and claims against public bodies carry their own timing rules. Much of the early work is documentary: police reports, treatment records, employment records to establish lost income.

How the team is built

Six attorneys are named on the firm's site. George S. Bellas is Senior Partner. Peter C. Wachowski and Yvette C. Nassopoulos are partners. Vicki Hathaway Gonzalez and Konstantina Christopoulos are associates, and Tracy A. Ries is Of Counsel.

Bellas started the firm in 1977 after leaving a position as a prosecuting attorney. His own practice centres on business litigation. He has used technology in his work since the early 1980s and has handled e-discovery, which is the process of collecting and producing electronic records in litigation.

Wachowski has been admitted to practice since 1990, the same year he began working with Bellas. He belongs to the American, Illinois and Chicago Bar Associations. He has served as President of the Advocates Society, the bar association for Polish-American attorneys. Before law he managed his family's construction business, which is useful background in construction injury and contract work.

A partnership measured in decades

The Bellas and Wachowski working relationship goes back to 1990. For a firm founded in 1977, that means most of its history has run with the same two people at the top. Continuity of that length is worth noting because it affects how a matter gets handled when it takes years to resolve. The attorney who took the first call is often still there at the end.

Bellas chaired the first Illinois State Bar Association Artificial Intelligence Committee in 2023. He also served on the Illinois Supreme Court Task Force on Artificial Intelligence. That is a solid factual base for a firm of this size, and it is more than many directory listings can show.
