How the firm took shape

The story starts in Wichita in 2001. Stephen Joseph and Ross Hollander founded the practice that year to handle civil and criminal litigation. At that point it was known as Joseph & Hollander, PA.

The name changed in 2011. Julia Craft joined the Wichita office, and the firm became Joseph, Hollander & Craft LLC. That shift lined up with a wider set of work, since the family law side grew alongside the litigation practice.

Growth after that was steady rather than sudden. The firm expanded to Topeka and added a Lawrence office. It opened an Overland Park office in 2016 and a Kansas City office in 2018.

Where the team works

Today the firm runs five offices across two states. Four sit in Kansas: Wichita, Topeka, Lawrence, and Overland Park. The fifth is in Kansas City, Missouri.

Wichita is the home office, the same city where the firm began. In my opinion, that spread matters for clients, because Kansas and Missouri courts each have their own rules, and a firm with lawyers in both states is set up to move between them.

Focus and practice areas

The firm groups its work into six areas. These are criminal defense, family law, personal injury, business law, professional licensure defense, and healthcare and hospital law.

Criminal defense covers state and federal courts, from the investigation stage through full prosecutions. Family law runs from divorce and child custody to child support, parenting time, spousal maintenance, and agreements made before or during a separation. Personal injury work includes claims from auto collisions and fires.

Two of the areas are narrower in subject, if not in name. Professional licensure defense covers the licenses of doctors, nurses, judges, attorneys, accountants, and real estate agents. Healthcare and hospital law sits close to that, dealing with the rules medical providers work under.

How the team is built

The firm states a team of more than 20 attorneys. Christopher M. Joseph serves as Managing Member. His own work centers on criminal defense in federal and state courts, along with complex civil litigation, and he heads the firm's criminal defense, asset forfeiture, and judicial discipline groups.

Family law

Family law has several named lawyers. Julia Craft, whose arrival gave the firm its current name, handles divorce, custody, support, and related agreements from Wichita, and she also prepares wills and powers of attorney. Christine Piña Rosengreen works from Kansas City on divorce, paternity, modification, guardianship, and adoption, and she serves as a Qualified Guardian ad Litem and a Certified Family Law Mediator for Missouri.

Boyd R. McPherson adds family law from Wichita, covering divorce, custody, support, and adoption, and he also helps businesses with liquor licensing in southcentral Kansas. Rylee M. Broyles, who graduated from Washburn University School of Law in 2021, works on family law and civil litigation defense. Ardith Smith-Woertz pairs family law with estate planning and probate.

Criminal defense and litigation

On the criminal side, Dionne M. Scherff defends adult and juvenile clients across Kansas and Missouri. Jess W. Hoeme concentrates on criminal litigation in Kansas. Carrie E. Parker, a member of the firm, handles criminal defense, appellate matters, and civil litigation, and Christopher M. McHugh combines criminal defense with civil and business litigation.

Regulatory and healthcare

The regulatory and healthcare work carries its own names. Diane L. Bellquist, a member of the firm, represents people and entities before regulatory boards in Kansas and Missouri. Anne M. Kindling advises healthcare organizations and providers on hospital law, regulatory compliance, medical staff matters, and the defense of medical malpractice claims.

What the record shows

Some details in the attorney profiles stand out for how concrete they are. Dionne M. Scherff has litigated felony jury trials in federal and state courts, and Kansas qualifies her to handle death penalty cases. The firm states she is one of two lawyers in the state's death penalty history to win the dismissal of a capital case.

Jess W. Hoeme's profile puts a number on his reach: he has represented clients in 85 of Kansas' 105 counties. He also represents Kansas law enforcement officers and agencies in professional matters and investigations.

A few lawyers list their schooling plainly. Diane L. Bellquist earned a B.S. from Moorhead State University in 1999 and a J.D. from the University of Kansas School of Law in 2002, and she previously served as Assistant General Counsel for the Kansas Board of Healing Arts. Boyd R. McPherson holds a B.S. from the University of Kansas and a J.D. from Washburn University of Topeka. As a reviewer, I read that kind of specific, checkable detail as a good sign.

How this reads for someone choosing a firm

Put together, the picture is of a general-practice firm with real depth on two fronts: criminal defense and family law. The regulatory, healthcare, business, and injury work fills out the rest.

The office network gives clients across Kansas and into Missouri a local point of contact. The clearest strength here is the mix of courtroom experience and named attorneys who each own a defined area of the work, with school records and roles stated openly rather than left vague.
